"A Holistic Alternative Education Provision which provides bespoke programmes for students struggling in mainstream education."

The King's Way (TKW)'s alternative model with its holistic approach embraces the uniqueness of the young person’s personality, family life, and their social, emotional and mental health needs.

Apart from delivering an academic provision TKW also aims to:

  • identify the root causes which led to the young person finding mainstream education and life a struggle
  • take reactive steps to address, then overcome these causes building a bridge back to mainstream education or employment
  • implement preventative measures to help reduce the risk of future influence upon the young person’s academic, emotional wellbeing and career journeys.

TKW work closely with 10 different secondary schools and 2 further education colleges supporting students from year 7 to year 13. Academically we support the subjects the students study in their mainstream school; identify and support learning difficulties, whilst developing their social, emotional and mental health.

Working closely with staff in both secondary schools and colleges, TKW provides a bridge for students to return to mainstream education or an apprenticeship placement. Mentoring and, in some cases, counselling are an intrinsic part of our learning environment, supporting the young person emotionally, socially as well as academically.

TKW’s belief is that we cannot deal with the young person as an island, therefore we endeavour to build close relationships with their family and friends in the aim to support them in every part of their lives. To this end our Alternative Provision works closely with our Family Support Team (EMBRACE), sign- posting to and working in partnership with other relevant agencies.

TKW's premise, one size does not fit all, creates an holistic, bespoke approach to supporting young people. Rarely can a young person articulate what their difficulties are; their behaviour and attitude reflect an inner turmoil which they themselves do not understand. We begin our support through building relationships with the young person to discover who they are, what makes them tick. We observe them in various environments to see how they respond in order to discover where their difficulties lie and what the underlying causes may be. We then develop a programme around the individual to help them overcome their obstacles and get back on track by either transitioning back into their mainstream school or moving on to further education or apprenticeships.
